Finding a solid performance shop in the Tri-Cities area isn’t as simple as typing a search into Google and picking whoever shows up first. There are a lot of shops that will take your money and slap on parts but very few that actually understand how those parts work together, how your car behaves under load, and how to build something that’s still reliable two years from now.
We’ve seen plenty of cars come through our Richland shop that were “tuned” somewhere else. Some were just poorly built. Others were flat-out dangerous. The owner had no idea because they didn’t know what questions to ask before the work started.
So here’s a straightforward guide, six questions you should ask any performance shop in the Tri-Cities, Kennewick, Pasco, or anywhere in Eastern Washington before you let them touch your car.
1. Do You Have an In-House Dyno?
Shops that outsource their dyno work have less control over the tuning process. You want a shop where the tuner and the dyno are in the same building, so they can make real-time adjustments and validate the results before your car leaves.
At Valencia Motorsports in Richland, all of our dyno tuning is done in-house. When we say your Hellcat made 780 wheel horsepower, we have the dyno sheet to prove it.
2. What Platforms Do You Actually Specialize In?
A shop that works on everything from import sedans to diesel trucks is a generalist. That’s fine for oil changes. It’s not what you want for a supercharged Corvette or a built Camaro ZL1.
Ask specifically what platforms they have real experience with not just what they’re willing to attempt. The best performance shops in the Pacific Northwest have a focused roster of vehicles they know inside and out: LT1, LT4, Hemi, LSX, whatever it may be.

3. Do You Offer a Warranty on Your Work?
This is where you separate the shops that stand behind their builds from the ones that disappear after you drive off the lot. Any reputable performance shop should offer some form of warranty on parts and labor.
Ask what’s covered, for how long, and what voids it. A shop that gets defensive about this question is telling you something.

4. Can You Show Me Builds You’ve Done on My Specific Model?
Photos, dyno sheets, customer testimonials and real shops have them. If a performance shop in the Tri-Cities tells you they can build your C8 Z06 but can’t show you a single previous C8 they’ve worked on, that’s worth paying attention to.
You’re not being difficult by asking for proof of experience. You’re being smart. A $5,000 to $20,000 performance build on a car you love deserves that level of vetting.

5. Is This Build Going to Be Street-Legal and Daily-Driveable?
Some shops optimize for peak numbers without thinking about how the car actually drives on real roads. A tune that makes 900hp on a closed course but stumbles in traffic or throws codes in cold weather is not a good tune for someone commuting on US-395 in January.
Eastern Washington has its own conditions to think about, cold winters, high desert heat in summer, long highway stretches between towns. Your performance upgrades need to work in all of it, not just at wide-open throttle on a perfect day.
Ask explicitly: will this drive well every day? If the answer is vague, keep pushing. At Valencia, drivability is part of what we tune for, not an afterthought.
6. What Does the Full Build Process Look Like From Start to Finish?
A professional shop should be able to walk you through the entire process intake, assessment, parts sourcing, installation timeline, tuning, and final delivery. Vague answers like ‘we’ll figure it out as we go’ are a warning sign.
You should also ask who will be working on your car. Is it a certified technician with direct experience on your platform, or is it someone still learning on your dime?
